Puzzle Questions in Interviews
Jeff Atwood of Coding Horror posted his thoughts on using puzzle questions in interviews. He is not a fan of the puzzle question and prefers to “have the candidate give a 10 minute watercooler presentation to your team on something they’ve worked on.” His reason is that he thinks communication is a key trait for the strongest engineers. We agree.
Jeff then goes on to say that you would probably want to complement this presentation with some hands on programming to make sure the engineer knows their stuff. This sounds like a good approach to interviewing. We combined the two, presentation and programming, in our recommended approach to the technical interview. You probably can’t go wrong with either approach.
