Upgrade Your Team!

In a recent interview with Brian Watson of CIO Insight, I explained that a recession is a terrible thing to waste. You’ve heard us say it before in our posts such as Building High Performance Teams and Seed, Feed and Weed to Succeed, and we even reference this practice in our forthcoming book “The Art of Scalability” (tentatively scheduled Jan 2010 through Pearson Education). The point is that you should be looking at this recession as an opportunity to upgrade talent.
Cut more than you have to and replace your lower performing individuals. The market is full of good people from failed companies who will work hard for you and help you upgrade your team.
If you are asked to cut 5 to 10 percent of your team for budget purposes, get permission to cut 10 to 15 percent and back fill the 5% extra with even better people!
Remember – your job is to have the best team possible for your budget.
